Vintage motorcycles and scooters are more than just machines.
If you have one or you're an aficionado, they become a part of your lifestyle. But they are machines. Old machines. And they are often in need of repair. Unfortunately it's not always easy to find a shop that is capable and caring enough to work on something that means so much. For these reasons it was important for the folks at Ace Motorcycle & Scooter Co. in Chicago's West Loop to have a logo that would beckon this spirit.
As designers it was an exciting name to have in front of us; Ace Motorcycle & Scooter Co. It sounded more like an art school assignment than a real client! Of course the challenge was to avoid the trite vintage motorcycle pitfalls and create a fresh, contemporary emblem. MCD established a working relationship with Ace when we designed artwork for a 2008 fall event named, 'Acetoberfest', so we had a good feel for the shop and their personality. The result was a combination of iconic motorcycle elements with clean iron-age typography that look as good on letterhead as it does as a patch on your favorite leather jacket.
